Marriott Sukhumvit Hotel has attracted our attention to their restaurants since its opening on 18 March 2013. Good reviews and comments are found in all social media platforms such as Tripadvisor. We have introduced their steakhouse – The District on our website before. This time we visited 57th Street for the buffet dinner. As an American hotel chain, I see deliberate intention in naming the restaurant as 57th Street. Just imagine, if you were walking along 57th Street in Manhattan, one of the most intriguing cities in the world, you would see countless prestigious art galleries, renowned fine restaurants and up-market shops; then what would you think about this restaurant? How would you think about their food?
57th Street has an elegant decor, with live open kitchen. The restaurant is lit softly, creating a comfortable dining atmosphere for diners.
The most attractive found counter here is the fresh seafood counter. On one side you will find oysters, mussels and river prawns; on the other side, your will find clams, tiger prawns and a few kinds of fish such as dory and salmon for making hot dishes in the way you would like it cooked. On the day of my visit, we found the oysters were so so. They were fresh but rather tasteless. However, their seafood hot station did a brilliant job in cooking the seafood right. We like the grilled dory and fried salmon in black pepper sauce. The fish was not overcooked, it was moist and full of original flavour.
Apart from seafood, you can also find a salad bar, cheese and cold cuts, live pasta cooking station, Indian and Thai cuisines, and a dessert room. Although the cheese and cold cuts counter did not impress us a lot due to limited premium choices, we found that all Indian and Thai dishes were tasty. For those who love hot dishes, you will like 57th Street. The dessert room provides diners many different kinds of sweets, with a soft ice-cream machine serving vanilla and chocolate flavours.
The buffet dinner is priced at around THB 1,600, including tax and VAT (THB 1,357 ++). It is not regarded as an expensive buffet. The dining environment and service are of 5-star standard, a more premium buffet to include sashimi and steak could be introduced.
