Louie Cuisine is located in the centre of Dingxi Road in Shanghai. Shanghai, a vibrant metropolis at the heart of China’s east coast, is a gateway to the country’s rich history and modern sophistication. The city is a melting pot of cultures, which is vividly reflected in its diverse culinary scene. From the bustling street food stalls offering local snacks like xiaolongbao and shengjianbao, to upscale restaurants serving a fusion of eastern and western flavours, Shanghai promises an unforgettable gastronomic journey. The city’s food landscape is a testament to its status as a global hub, inviting travellers to savour dishes that span the breadth of Chinese cooking and beyond, making every meal an exploration of tastes and traditions.

Visiting Shanghai after 15 years, the city amazed me. Flying all the way from Bonn, Germany (a country I regard as ‘The Land of Bread’) to Shanghai, my heart filled with excitement. I eagerly looked forward to my culinary adventure. This time, I chose a Cantonese restaurant – Louie Cuisine.

Louie Cuisine, stewarded by its Executive Chef, Wong Kam Chung, aims to give foodies in Shanghai an authentic experience of Cantonese cuisine. With his exceptional culinary skills, each dish is a tribute to the profound culinary heritage of Cantonese cuisine. Behaving like a ghost of hunger, I ordered many traditional Cantonese dishes popular in my hometown, Hong Kong.

As a tradition in the Southern part of China, a delightful dinner often starts with a bowl of traditional Cantonese soup. Chef Chung prepared for us a delicious Apricot Kernel and Fish Maw Chicken Soup, which was prepared one day before our visit. The soup is aromatic and full of the aroma of the ingredients.  The first sip not only delighted the palate but also boosted my energy after a long flight.

All the dishes prepared by Chef Chung reminded me of the Dai Pai Dong (Street Food stalls for hot fried dishes) in Hong Kong but at the finest standard in taste and culinary skills. The fried oysters was an irresistible beauty. On the outside, it was delicately crispy. On the inside, the plump oyster was still fresh and juicy. Chef Chung’s exceptional skills in timing and deep-frying turned this plump oyster a delight on the taste buds.

Other dishes like steamed pork with preserved vegetables and finely-chopped squid, braised beef briskets and turnips and fried squabs perfectly fulfilled my cravings for Cantonese cuisine. Dining at Louie Cuisine truly catered to my Cantonese roots. There’s a unique satisfaction in savouring a feast that not only tastes familiar but is also exceptionally crafted to remind one of home. The fried squabs were unforgettable, with crispy, thin skin and juicy, tender meat—a mouthful of flavours! Literally, I have had a flawless and delightful dinner!
