Savelberg is a name very well-known in Holland. Stewarded by founder and owner Henk Savelberg, this restaurant has proudly been awarded one Michelin star annually from 1998 to 2014. What has motivated Chef Henk Savelberg to leave his comfort zone in Holland and moved all the way to Bangkok is quite obvious. It’s the launch of Bangkok Michelin Guide in December 2017. Our guess is that he would like to attain more than just one Michelin star. No matter what the reasons are, foodies in Bangkok are the beneficiaries.
What to choose at Savelberg
I struggled to choose between savouring the tasting menu or a la carte menu at Savelberg. Choosing a tasting menu means I could try most of his must-try dishes whereas choosing directly from the a la carte menu means I could enjoy to the fullest a normal serving of the food. As I really wanted to satisfy my palate, I decided to choose dishes that I wanted to try from the a la carte menu.

TRIO OF AMUSE BOUCHE
These small bites were meant to prepare our palate to savour the dinner later. First, a refreshing grilled watermelon on a silver spoon was served to us. The second amuse bouche, Foie gras mousse, followed closely. Finally, we were served the last amuse bouche, crab meat pearl in a shell, which was a beauty in the eyes. This trio of amuse bouche excited my palate with a progressive solid texture and intensity in taste.
The size of our second starter delighted us. The Simmental beef is a Swiss breed of cattle and tastes earthy with a more pronounced flavour. With contrasting flavours and textures of the ingredients, every bite aroused an undeniable craving for it.
LAMB Roasted lamb fillet | Potato | Green asparagus| Green peas | Lardo di Colonnata| Lamb sauce
I am definitely not exaggerating. This roasted lamb fillet is the best lamb I have ever tasted in Asia. It was impressively outstanding. The rectangular lean lamb fillet was astonishingly tender. Enjoying the lamb with transparent slices of Lardo di Colonnata that melted on my tongue wowed my palate! Perfect! What I especially like about this dish is its simplicity. A few ingredients including the vegetable accompaniments accentuate the full flavour and texture of the lamb!
The striploin beef was cooked to its perfection. This main dish was another blast on our palate. The portion really made me grin, it further confirmed my decision of not choosing the tasting menu. It’s very satisfying.
MANGO Stracciatella mousse | Lychee | Yellow mango | Different preparations of yoghurt & lemon
This dessert was definitely a perfect end to my dinner. It was not too sweet but very fruity.
I personally prefer this dessert. I found the combination of peach, orange and basil especially pleasing to my palate. The aroma of fresh peach remained in the nostril enhancing the aftertaste of the dessert! Unforgettable is the word I would use to describe it.
