Teppen Sathorn, inconspicuous but tempting, is a worth-visiting restaurant located in Sathorn Soi 8. Teppen doesn’t raise any colourful flag or light up LED signage to attract guests. The most noticeable exterior decor of Teppen is the white ‘noren’ that flutters in the wind hanging on the black wooden fence.
The extensive menu of Teppen Sathorn includes all the best dishes from Japan such as a Michelin-starred dish – Anago sushi, which is served as a specialty at Teppen at weekends.

Social media-worthy moments
Teppen Sathorn is spacious with choices for private rooms, indoor and outdoor seatings, as well as the bar table. Our favourite spot is at the bar, it’s an Instagram-worthy spot where you can see the motions of chefs, especially when the chefs are making warayaki – a cooking method of roasting over inflammable rice straw. This is the moment you would not want to miss and would probably put you in amazement! Although the fire looks huge and uncontrollable, the roast & grill is spot-on.
Our dining experience
Ask the chef for some recommendations of sake to pair with the dishes you order. We did that and found the recommended sake complemented each dish we had enjoyed. More importantly, it enhanced the overall dining experience. With the wide selection of sake (more than 100 types of sake) available at Teppen Sathorn, I am sure you are able to find one that delights your palate.
The signature dish at Teppen Sathorn is their warayaki dish, which is highly recommended. Not only because of its Instagram-worthy or Facebook live-worthy moments but because of the taste. It’s a smoky flavour with a pleasing aroma of rice straw brushed on the ingredients. We highly recommend two warayaki dishes – Bonito warayaki and Wayu warayaki.
Bonito warayaki
The bonito served at Teppen Sathorn is the best and freshest quality found in Japan Highlands. Frozen at -60 degrees during transportation, the bonito is kept very fresh. It is then sliced into thick pieces for roasting over the inflammable rice straw. When it is served to you, eat like me. Forget about dining etiquette, use the chopstick to pick up a whole piece of roasted bonito. Then put the whole piece in your mouth. While the bonito is in your mouth, take a breath to feel the smokiness and aroma. Let your taste buds have fun with the flavoursome fresh bonito. It’s a perfect bite, too perfect to forget; and too perfect not to return for more.
Wagyu warayaki
Roasted to reach medium-rare, this Wagyu warayaki is a must-try dish. Melted in the mouth while releasing beefy juice on your taste buds, this dish totally wins my heart! To enjoy the best layered flavours, eat it with some sauce, chopped scallion, a tiny pinch of salt and garlic slices.
There are many more dishes that you should not miss at Teppen Sathorn. One of them, also another impressive highlight of the restaurant, is Uni Ikura Ebi Don (sea urchin, salmon roe, shrimp).
Uni Ikura Ebi Don (sea urchin, salmon roe, shrimp)
What’s so special about this rice bowl? Despite the fact that the sea urchin, salmon roe and shrimps are all very fresh and tasty, the star is the egg. The eggs are directly imported from Japan. Honestly speaking, it is impossible to find such delicious eggs in Thailand. When breaking the egg yolk and mix with the rice, the thick sticky egg juice provides an aromatic, flavour-rich taste to the rice, perfectly enhancing the taste of this rice bowl.
How could we not order some sushi when dining at a Japanese restaurant? We tried a speical dish at Teppen Sathorn.
Aburi meshi
We enjoyed Aburi meshi, which is a reproduction of a similar dish served at a very popular restaurant in Tokyo – Junsui. Sashmi is put on top of the seasoned sushi rice that is served with pickled Daikon radish on the side. Then it is flame-grilled in front of you right at your dining table. ‘Delicious and authentic‘ are the two words the can perfectly describe this dish.
A truly satisfying meal should include something sweet. We ordered Imostick Goma sauce and Ichigo Fuwa Fuwa Oreo, which ended our meal with perfection.
Imostick Goma sauce
Imostick Goma sauce, which is another speciality at Teppen Sathorn, is a lovely, tasty snack that we enjoyed with high satisfaction. Deep-fried sweet potato sticks are crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The sauce is a kind of special sauce which is housemade using quality black sesame and honey. The texture of this sauce is sticky but smooth; the sweetness is mild with a honey aroma. Eating the sweet potato sticks with this special sauce will make you fall in love with this wonderful marriage of flavours.
Ichigo Fuwa Fuwa Oreo
Deep-fried Oreo made in tempura style gives a soft, fluffy texture. Going hand-in-hand with the strawberry ice-cream, we found each bite of the deep-fried Oreo so amazing in the mouthfeel. ‘How does the chef make it?’ is the question I would like to ask. You should try it yourself!
We also enjoyed a glass of strawberry sake cocktail while savouring these scrumptious desserts. The bubbles of this sake cocktail make every bite of the dessert more enticing! It’s a kind of pairing that I have never tried before but definitely loving it!
